Aerosols
May or may not be permitted.
Automotive antifreeze
Is not considered dangerous and can be carried in any amount.
Auxiliary fuel tanks
That form an integral part of the vehicle, connected by a fuel line to the engine fuel system, are built in and engineered, and firmly secured and protected from external damage, are permitted. Auxiliary fuel tanks are not to be confused with spare gas tanks (see Gasoline) or Tidy Tanks.
Adhesive
Some adhesive products are classified as dangerous goods and may or may not be permitted.
Air bottles and scuba tanks/enriched air
- Oxygen - limited amounts required for personal medical use only is generally permitted. Please notify terminal staff if you are carrying personal medical oxygen.
- Scuba tanks including cylinders containing enriched air may be permitted.
- Dangerous goods shipping document required.
- Empty SCUBA tanks with valves fully opened and not containing any compressed air or under pressure are not considered dangerous goods.
- SCUBA tanks are not considered baggage. BC Ferries employees are not permitted to handle them or transport in baggage vans.
Ammunition
Depending on the quantity, means of containment, and stowage, may or may not be permitted.
Diesel fuel
In approved means of containment and otherwise meeting general safety requirements is generally permitted.
Electric vehicles (EVs)
Federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations classify damaged or defective EV batteries as dangerous goods that require special handling and documentation.
If an EV cannot move under its own power or has any signs of damage to the battery, it will not be permitted onboard. However, new or undamaged used EVs in transit on full-sized commercial car carriers or towed behind recreational vehicles or moving trucks, are permitted onboard.
This is because if the EV’s safety management systems (such as active battery monitoring and thermal controls) are non-functional due to immobilization or damage, BC Ferries cannot verify the safety of the battery, which presents a serious risk in a marine environment.
Fire extinguishers
Permitted when securely affixed to the vehicle for safety purposes. May or may not be permitted when transported as cargo.
Fireworks
Are prohibited on BC Ferries. Some pyrotechnics are permitted if they are used as safety equipment for a vehicle or are equipment being transported. These pyrotechnics will normally fall under the category of Class 1.4s.
Foot passenger carry-on commodities
Are allowed on the car deck of the northern vessels, with approval. Check with departure terminal for confirmation.
- Passengers may carry outboard motors, chain saws, etc. onto the car deck only. This type of equipment is not permitted in passenger areas.
- Foot passengers that are camping must hand over their camping fuel to the loading officer.
Gasoline
Is permitted on BC Ferries in limited amounts and in containers approved to carry gasoline (e.g. CSA-approved jerrycans). Your vehicle’s fuel tank must contain the same type of fuel you are carrying.
- Personal vehicles are permitted:
- 1 approved 25 litre container or jerrycan of gasoline properly secured within the vehicle. The container is considered a dangerous good if it contains any amount of gasoline, including only gasoline fumes.*
- Vehicles that are towing a motorboat, or up to 2 ATVs, snowmobiles, motorbikes or personal watercraft in a trailer are permitted:
- 2 additional approved 25 litre containers or jerrycans of gasoline secured in the trailer.
There are no other amounts of gasoline allowed on a passenger vessel. This includes gasoline in tidy tanks.
* Approved portable containers that once carried gasoline (maximum size 25 litres) must be filled TO THE BRIM with water in order to no longer qualify as dangerous goods. There is no limit to the number of containers up to 25 litres in size, that can be carried when they are filled to the brim with water.
Note: No dangerous goods documentation is required if you travel with amounts of gasoline within the limits above.
Hay bales
May be permitted if they are secured within a closed vehicle or the load must be completely tarped/covered to prevent random ignition. A dangerous goods shipping document is required and is transported under UN1327. In addition, Class 4.1 placarding must be displayed when transporting over 500kgs (1100lbs).
Marine pollutants
Are hazardous to aquatic life and humans; therefore, all marine pollutants must be identified on a dangerous goods shipping document.
Medical Oxygen
Limited amounts required for personal medical use only is generally permitted. Please notify terminal staff if you are carrying personal medical oxygen.
Paint
And related paint products, including lacquer, enamel, stain, shellac, varnish, polish, liquid filler and liquid lacquer base, paint thinners or reducing compounds may or may not be permitted.
Propane
Is permitted on BC Ferries in approved cylinders within specific limits and when carried for domestic use only. Cylinders must be upright and securely attached to the vehicle.
- Recreational vehicles (e.g. RVs, campers and motorhomes) are permitted:
- Up to two (2) cylinders with a combined capacity not exceeding 65L, and each cylinder individually must not exceed 46L.
- Propane is for domestic use only and must be secured to the vehicle or trailer.
- A vehicle or trailer carrying propane for personal use (for camping or BBQs) is permitted:
- One (1) cylinder with a capacity not exceeding 18.9L; or
- Up to three (3) 1L cylinders (UN1075).
- Note: The cylinders listed above (one 18.9L or three 1L) are in addition to those already allowable for a recreational vehicle.
Important: All propane tanks must be closed and tagged prior to boarding. The capacity of propane cylinders, known as “water capacity”, can be found on the collar that surrounds and protects the valve. No dangerous goods documentation is required if you travel within the propane limits listed above.
Service vehicles
Including welding, refrigeration and plumbing vehicles, or any vehicle having a service repair function, may be classed as a service vehicle. Service vehicles travelling in marine mode are required to present a shipping document for dangerous goods. Call the terminal of departure for details on limits.
Wheelchairs (motorized)
Have no restrictions when they are in use, but there are some precautions when they are carried as cargo or freight:
- The battery must be securely in place, disconnected, with the terminals insulated to prevent short-circuiting.
- The chair itself must be securely anchored so that it will not move.
