Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP Act)

You can request access to records that are not routinely available by making a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. Anyone can make a request—there are no restrictions on your location, age (if over 12), or nationality.

We are regularly reviewing what information we share proactively and without a request.

If you wish to make a general records request for traffic statistics, please note that our monthly traffic and quarterly cancellation reports may be found here and our quarterly traffic reports are available at the British Columbia Ferries Commissioner’s website.

Requests for other traffic statistics generally will be processed in accordance with the FOIPP Act, but please note we may consider, for example, whether disclosure of information could reasonably be expected to harm our financial or economic interests.

Before you make a request

You may be able to find the information you need (at no cost to you) on our website. If you’re unable to find the information, you can make an FOI request.

  • Records you can request: The FOIPP Act applies to all records within BC Ferries’ custody or control, including general records, or records containing personal information—personal records.
  • Cost: There is no charge for requests for your own personal records. In accordance with the FOIPP Act, general records requests are subject to a $10 application fee prior to the request being processed, and may also be subject to fees for services, such as locating and retrieving the requested records.

To make an FOI request

Describe the records you are requesting as accurately as possible, and limit your request to only the records you need. Overly generic requests for general records will take longer to process and may result in higher fees and the need for time extensions.

We will respond to your request, subject to any extensions permitted under the FOIPP Act, within 30 working days after your request is received. This timeline does not include the time spent waiting for clarification of the request and payment of fees.

General records are corporate records of a non-personal nature. You must pay a $10 application fee before we will process your request.

Personal records contain personal information about yourself, a child or another individual, e.g., an individual’s name, address or telephone number. Personal requests must be signed.
